APC & Fees

H0 Journal · A publication of Neural Prosody, LLC

Open access, funded by authors — not readers.

H0 Journal is fully open access. Every article we publish is immediately and permanently free to read, download, and reuse by anyone, anywhere. To sustain this model, we charge an article processing charge (APC) to authors whose manuscripts are accepted for publication.

Current APC

The article processing charge for H0 Journal is $750 USD.

This is H0 Journal's founding rate, established to make open access publication accessible to researchers across institutional contexts while sustaining the infrastructure, peer review administration, digital preservation, and editorial operations that underpin a rigorous publication process.

The APC is charged upon acceptance of a manuscript following peer review. Submission to H0 Journal is free. Authors are never charged to submit, to receive a peer review decision, or to access any feature of the submission system.

What the APC covers

Your APC directly funds:

  • Peer review administration, including compensation paid to peer reviewers

  • CrossRef DOI registration and metadata deposit

  • Open Journal Systems hosting and platform maintenance

  • Digital preservation through the PKP Preservation Network

  • Editorial operations and production

  • DataCite dataset registration support

Neural Prosody does not operate an advertising model or receive institutional subsidies. The APC is the primary means by which H0 Journal sustains its operations and its commitment to fully open, human-first publishing.

Waivers

Neural Prosody offers APC waivers on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief. Waiver requests are evaluated entirely independently of the manuscript review process — editorial decisions are never influenced by an author's APC status or waiver request.

Authors who lack institutional or grant funding to cover the APC are encouraged to contact the editorial office prior to submission to discuss their circumstances. Requests submitted after acceptance are also considered. We ask that authors with access to funding — including research grants, institutional open access funds, or funder mandates — use those resources before requesting a waiver, so that waivers remain available for researchers who need them most.

To request a waiver, contact the editorial office with a brief statement of your circumstances. You do not need to provide detailed financial documentation.

Funding your APC

Many authors are able to cover APCs through existing funding sources. Common options include:

  • Research grant budgets — most major funders, including NIH, NSF, and Wellcome Trust, permit APC costs as allowable expenses

  • Institutional open access funds — many universities maintain dedicated funds for author APCs; check with your library or research office

  • Funder open access mandates — authors subject to Plan S or equivalent funder mandates may have APC costs covered directly

  • Society memberships — some professional society memberships include publication fee support

If you are unsure whether your funding source covers APCs, contact your institution's library or grants office before submission.

Payment

APC invoices are issued upon acceptance of a manuscript. Payment is accepted via credit card or bank transfer. Instructions are provided in the acceptance communication. Published articles will not appear in the journal record until payment has been received or a waiver has been confirmed.

A note on our founding rate

$750 is H0 Journal's founding APC, established for Year 1 (2026). Neural Prosody is committed to transparency in pricing: any future changes to the APC will be announced publicly with a minimum of 90 days notice, and will never apply retroactively to manuscripts already under review or accepted for publication.
