For Reviewers
Reviewer Qualifications
Neural Prosody seeks reviewers with demonstrated expertise in psychology, behavioral science, or closely related disciplines. Eligible reviewers include:
Graduate-level researchers and scholars (master's, doctoral, or equivalent) with relevant subject matter expertise
Advanced doctoral candidates with documented research experience in the manuscript’s topical area
Licensed practitioners with an active scholarly record in the relevant area, including recent peer-reviewed publications, clinical research, or equivalent demonstrated expertise
Reviewer selection is conducted by the handling editor on the basis of subject matter fit, absence of conflicts of interest, and demonstrated scholarly record. All reviewer assignments are subject to editorial discretion. Inclusion in our reviewer database does not guarantee assignment to any particular manuscript.
Peer Review at Neural Prosody
Peer review is the foundation of credible scholarly publication. It is also, by any honest accounting, skilled intellectual labor—labor that the academic publishing industry has historically extracted without compensation. Neural Prosody takes a different position: reviewers who contribute their expertise to our journals are compensated directly for that work.
Every completed peer review submitted to a Neural Prosody journal is compensated at a flat rate of $150 USD, paid via PayPal or direct transfer upon acceptance of the completed review by the handling editor. No special eligibility requirements apply beyond the qualifications described below. Compensation is not contingent upon the editorial outcome of the manuscript under review.
What We Ask of Reviewers
Neural Prosody conducts double-anonymized peer review. Reviewers are not disclosed to authors, and author identities are not disclosed to reviewers. We ask that all reviewers:
Complete reviews within the agreed-upon timeframe, typically 21 days from manuscript receipt
Provide substantive, constructive written feedback addressing methodological quality, contribution to the literature, clarity, and ethical considerations as applicable
Disclose any conflicts of interest—including personal, professional, financial, or intellectual relationships with the authors or subject matter—prior to accepting a review assignment
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding manuscript content and the review process
Conduct all review work independently, without the use of AI-assisted technologies, in accordance with Neural Prosody’s AI Use Policy
Compensation and Payment
Upon submission of a completed review, the handling editor will assess the report for completeness and substantiveness. Reviews accepted by the editor will trigger payment processing within 14 business days. Neural Prosody compensates peer reviewers at a flat rate of $150 USD per article. This fee covers the full review cycle for a given manuscript — including the initial review report and any re-reviews of revised versions of the same submission. Re-reviews are not separately compensated.
Reviewers are responsible for any tax obligations arising from compensation received. Neural Prosody will issue applicable tax documentation in accordance with U.S. federal requirements for payments meeting reporting thresholds.
A Note on Null Results
Neural Prosody’s flagship journal, H0 Journal, is dedicated to the publication of psychological research distinguished by methodological rigor—including, and especially, studies that yield null results. Reviewers evaluating manuscripts submitted to H0 Journal are asked to assess the quality of the research design, the appropriateness of the statistical approach, and the transparency of reporting, independent of whether the findings confirm a hypothesis. A well-designed study that returns a null result is a contribution to the scientific record. Our review process is structured to recognize and support that standard.
